Backcombing and Crimping Research

Here is a look created by backcombing the hair to get that messy ponytail and also to create that quiff  look at the front of the head, here, you could also use some padding to get that big roll over effect.

Here is a full head that has been crimped and then styled, I would imagine that there was padding used here to create the shape.

Here's a crimp that has been brushed out at the bottoms and just left hardly styled.

I like this hair style because the bottom of the hair is crimped, then right at the top it is left  and the bottom is also backcombed. It does look really messy but with the crimp in the middle it looks really structured and thought out.

At the Stella Mccartney S/S 2015 show she used crimp in her hair designs for her catwalk tied up in a simple low ponytail, very simple yet still very effective.

More Modern Hair Designs

I absolutely love this Alexander McQueen design, the hair just looks fantastic! I love how it is really messy yet it still manages to look classy and elegant, there was definitely a lot of backcombing involved to create this heart shape and I really like how it is so big and rounded.

This design on model Lily Cole I really liked. I love how it is a real contemporary design yet there are definitely hints of Elizabethan history in the design. The design has that heart shape but it looks sort of reversed with the middle parting at the top and the actual shape of the hair is at the bottom with a level top. The hair is big and bold which I really like and I love how messy it is yet still looks very classy.

I find this design really cool, the way they have created the heart shape but completely changed  the hair and how it looks by making the heart shape pointed and with a strange criss cross effect throughout right on the top of the head. Something that nobody would really think about to do and then I really like how they still have managed to keep the high forehead yet have the curl details there too and how they have painted the hair yet the redness of the models hair peeps through creating more depth to the hair. Such an ingenious hair design.

Sam McKnight for Chanel

Chanel's Pre-Fall show inspired by the Elizabethan times was full of incredible hair designs.

The models had high hair lines on their foreheads, a backcombed or padded front and top part of the hair created that raised up area above the forehead and at the back was plaits intertwined into the hair design. I absolutely love the back of this design as the plaits are so beautifully places it just adds some extra detail to the design.

The hair looks like it was crimped but a large crimp to create the structure for the hair and I think that backcombing was used also.

Jewels like pearls were added into the hair designs just like they would of been back in the Elizabethan era.

The backs of the hair was incredible with large plaits and braids going up the back of the head, beautiful detailing.

Hair Accessories in the Elizabethan Era

Elizabethan women loved to accessorise their hair, the bigger the better in that era and the more things you wore the more wealthier and high up you looked.

In our hair lesson we looked at some hair pieces that Elizabethan women wore back then.

CAUL:  A Caul is a loose net cap worn over the head, it normally has a lot of beading on it, mainly pearls as they were a favourite of the Elizabethan women.

Cauls were favoured by Elizabethan women and were worn at many different events and places, they were easy to use and kept the hair in tact.

French Hood: This was an alice band type head piece. It kept the hair off of the face, it was a thick headband that went up and out at the back creating the "hood" like shape. You could have a veil at the back draping down or not and a lot of the time these were decorated with lots of jewels.

Attifet: The Attifet, similar to the French Hood is another Alice Band like headpiece but it has that famous heart shape to it, so that when women had the heart shape hair they could also wear a headpiece that followed it. The front dip in the headpiece would normally be a fold over the headpiece that created the heart shape. This too could come with a veil or not and was decorated again with lots of gorgeous jewels and beads and also lace.

Pill Box Hat: This hat was worn by men and women in the Elizabethan era. The name of the hat explains the look of it, it was a small and round box like cap that would sit on the back of the head. It was normally decorated with gold or silver thread detailing and occasionally some beadwork and was worn normally with the hair up.

Cloth Bonnets: Cloth bonnets were a very popular headpiece worn by all women in Elizabethan time. It was worn by the poorer people on a daily basis to keep the hair out of the face, and normally was not detailed at all. It was also worn by maids and kitchen hands etc. The richer more wealthier people wore the bonnets a lot to keep the hair out of their face when they sleep, the more money you had the more detailed the bonnets would be.
